HLTAID006 Provide Advanced First Aid

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide advanced first aid response. This unit applies to people working in security and areas where the general public gathers in large groups such as shopping centres, airports and entertainment venues.

Participants will need oral communication skills in order to make an accurate verbal report to emergency services and a workplace supervisor. It is recommended that participants have language, literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to level 2 of the Australian Core Skills Framework.

Skills and knowledge must be demonstrated for applying first aid procedures for the following:

  • conduct a basic triage for multiple casualty incident;
  • appropriate duration and cessation of CPR;
  • assessment and interpretation of vital signs including (respirations, temperature and pulse);
  • chain of survival;
  • how to conduct a visual and verbal secondary survey assessment of casualty;
  • procedures for dealing with casualties who are aged or infirmed;
  • procedures when providing first aid to children;

Basic anatomy and physiology relating to:

  • response/level of consciousness;
  • considerations in provision of first aid for specified conditions;
  • awareness of confined spaces and dangerous places;
  • manual handling, hazardous substances, dangerous goods or chemicals;
  • spinal care;
  • apply – adrenaline auto-injector training device;
    • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training device;
    • Bag-valve-mask – eye patch – placebo bronchodilator and spacer device;
    • roller bandages;
    • thermometer;
    • triangular bandages;
    • workplace first Aid kit;
  • workplace injury, trauma and/or illness record, or other appropriate workplace incident report form;
  • wound dressings.
